Wait...so what is a "Personality Quiz" exactly?

I won’t insult your intelligence…
A Personality Quiz is essentially a topic made up of a series of quiz challenges that will lead to a particular outcome. It is similar to the multiple quizzes that are shared online, from “Which country should you spend the rest of your life in?” to “What type of Pokemon are you?”
So basically, a player would answer a series of multiple-choice questions, where the options are tagged (hidden, of course) and upon completion, the player will be informed of his/her outcome (that is based on their responses).

Glad you asked! There are 2 main ways to consider creating personality quizzes:

  1. The simple, not too in-depth way
  2. The more complex, detailed way
So imagine this: You are creating a personality quiz called, “What type of person are you?”. So what are the outcomes for your quiz? Maybe they could be the following?
Contented Depressed Angry Jealous
Great, so when a player completes your personality quiz, depending on their cumulative responses, they will receive an outcome that resembles their answers the most.

#1 THE SIMPLE WAY

We dubbed this as the simple route to a personality quiz mainly because there is less planning involved overall, particularly when content creation comes into play. This method consists of each question including responses that represent the various outcomes.

Question 1: You wake up in the morning and look in the mirror. What is your first thought?

So to put it simply, and easy to understand, here’s a sample of “the easy way”:

Option 1: Why is my life so hard? 🙁  (tagged to “Depressed”)

Option 2: What a beautiful day! 🙂 (tagged to “Contented”)

Option 3: Argh, life sucks! >.< (tagged to “Angry”)

Option 4: Why am I not as pretty as Taylor Swift? Sigh. (tagged to “Jealous”)

This method ensures that regardless of the number of challenges, there’s an equal amount of opportunities for a player to choose each outcome. In other words, you won’t have to worry about the number of questions you need to include in the quiz; just ensure that each outcome is represented in each question!

#2 The COMPLEX WAY

Another way to create a personality quiz is to plan out a more detailed quiz that comprises of a few (or a lot) more questions. This method involves having each question offering a spectrum of answers related to one outcome. This is to identify how much of that particular outcome does the player associate with (a.k.a to what extent).

Here’s an example of how this method could play out:
Question 1: You wake up in the morning and look in the mirror. What is your first thought? Option 1: This is going to be a good day. 🙂 (tagged to “Contented” but 5 points assigned) Option 2: I’m so grateful for everything in my life! 🙂 (tagged to “Contented” but 10 points assigned) Option 3: I LOVE WAKING UP IN THE MORNING EVERYDAY! 🙂 WOOTS! (tagged to “Contented” but 15 points assigned)

To fully explore the spectrum of answers of each outcome, this would be a preferred method, as you will be able to expand the range of options of each outcome in each question. This method also allows for a more varied response and reduce the chances of a tie happening. It may also provide players to end up with an outcome that speaks more about their responses. But do take note, we would advise you plan out an equal number of questions to ensure equal representation of all outcomes.

And there you go, two very different ways to go about creating your own personality quiz! Feeling inspired yet? No? Well, have a look at the following game and perhaps you’ll have a better idea of what personality quizzes are all about!
