PRESS RELEASE: Gametize selected as a winner in Jurong Lake District Innovation Challenge

12 July 2023

SINGAPORE – Gametize is one of eight winning solutions to be piloted in the Jurong Lake District (JLD) to lead the way in urban sustainability. At the awards presentation ceremony celebrating Advancing Sustainability Through Partnership and Innovation at the URA Centre, co-founder Keith Ng received the award from Minister for National Development, Singapore, Mr. Desmond Lee. Each winning team received a cash prize of $50,000 to support the implementation of the innovation.

The JLD Innovation Challenge, organized by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), Smart Nation and Digital Government Office (SNDGO) and the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA), presented challenge statements put forward by stakeholders including Capitaland, Ng Teng Fong General Hospital, Lendlease Global Commercial REIT, Land Transport Authority and the Science Centre Singapore. Prospective solution providers will then pitch their ideas to the challenge owners for their consideration.

Gametize’s winning submission for Science Centre Singapore is a gamified experience that encourages users to adopt sustainable practices by providing them with tools to track their own consumption and waste. Employing various gamification elements such as challenges, achievements, rewards, and feedback, the solution is designed to keep players engaged and motivated, drive positive behaviour and adopt sustainable practices. Another key aspect in Gametize’s winning pitch included social elements, which will allow users to share any data and tips on sustainable practices, foster a sense of community around sustainability and encourage users to support one another in their efforts to adopt more environmentally-friendly behaviors.

Gametize’s Project Advisor Tan Guan Heng shares, “The team picked this challenge because we saw an opportunity to work on a worthy cause, while offering a nimble, versatile gamified solution that can solve a real problem for society. This collaboration would allow us the creative freedom coupled with the expertise of subject matter experts from the Science Centre Singapore to promote sustainability. Our ongoing collaboration with SMU as an Industry Partner has encouraged us to focus in this space; students have created Gametize-powered gamified experiences to solve various sustainability problem statements, and these works can now be leveraged in reality by Science Centre.”

Gametize’s Project Lead Joanne adds, “With a working prototype already existing, we expect to traverse through multiple rounds of iterations and testings to ensure the best outcome. Beyond the funding, the network and testbed of users would be instrumental for us to make critical decisions on feature development and integrations with 3rd party solutions, such as data sources.”
